Ian Jones pointed me to an article on javaworld about VTD-XML, which is apparently "A new option that overcomes the problems of DOM and SAX".
It all sounds promising, although the article is light on code examples and heavy on comparisons, so I'll reserve judgement until I've used it. It does seem to concentrate on speed without mentioning conformity, which is not a good sign.
